From yesterday until the 24th. On May 1st, the art installation SADITI JE BITNO was installed on the Square of the Victims of Fascism in Zagreb, with which the young artist Lucija Žuti from Varaždin expresses her position on the mass cutting of Croatian forests. The installation was created as part of the project Visual construction of the political: 100 Beuys, jointly designed by the Goethe-Institut Kroatien and Subversive Festival, and produced by the Domino association. The project was supported by Požgaj Group and the European project ACT: Art, Climate, Transition.
By supporting this project, Požgaj Group lends its voice to responsible felling and sustainable forest management, green activism and artistic expression.
What the Požgaj Group has been primarily fighting against in the media in recent weeks is the selective, inconsistent and dubious application of criteria for the allocation of timber quotas by Croatian Forests, where they (as in our case) do not hesitate to abuse their monopolistic position. The harvested timber is not directed primarily to finalist producers, which means that it is not used in the way that our state and society would benefit from it the most. Statistics show that the production and export of finished products have been in decline for several years, while more and more raw materials are being exported. Such a policy of Croatian Forests devalues one of the most important resources owned by the Republic of Croatia – forests, and therefore we consider the goal of this project to be in line with our goal.
If you are from Zagreb or if you are visiting our capital these days and passing by the Square of Victims of Fascism, be sure to pay attention to this interesting art installation!
